Nomadtown, Manifesting the Global Village Hypothesis: A Case Study of a Rural Resilience Hub Within an Educational Milieu in North Karelia, Finland

2022

Setting the agenda for research on issue arenas

2014

Purpose– This paper seeks to contribute to the field of corporate communication by clarifying the theoretical basis of communication in issue arenas and proposing an agenda for research on issue arenas.Design/methodology/approach– Drawing on insights from stakeholder thinking, network theory, issues management, and agenda-setting theory, the authors identify different levels of analysis that could explain the behaviour of organisations in the public debate on current issues.Findings– The organisation-centred approach is replaced by a strong emphasis on interaction in networks of organisations, groups and individuals. Decision-making on communication strategies can be further developed by an…

2012

It is a qualitative approach to the use and perception of over 55 years of technology and information communication technology (ICT), specifically the use of online social networks. By the technique of focus groups will try to find the prejudices, myths, knowledge, motivations, barriers, etc.. use or not online social netw…

Estar al otro lado de la mesa. Profesionales de los servicios públicos de empleo ante los dilemas de la activación laboral

2019

Under the paradigm of activation, the Public Employment Services has been reshaped by two levels of contractualization. On one hand, the collaboration of the administration with a network of agents on the programme scheme that make up the active policies of employment. On the other hand, the unemployed person?s access to a compartmentalized offer of services and individually taking responsibility for finding work. This double contractualization reveals redefinition of lowering public responsibility faced with the problem of unemployment that this activation supposes. This paper analyses how this redesign has an impact on how professionals serve the unemployed population. This lays bare, in …

KOSMOS 2017 Peru Side Experiment: nutrients, phytoplankton abundances, enzyme rates, photophysiology

2022

This data was collected during an short-term incubation experiment in March 2017 that investigated the response of a surface plankton community to upwelling. This experiment was carried in the framework of the SFB754-funded KOSMOS mesocosm study that took place in La Punta, Callao, Peru between February-April 2017. A total of six different treatments were used to disentangle chemical and biological characteristics of deep water that influence surface plankton blooms: 2 different deep water sources with different nutrient concentrations; 3 treatments to distinguish the effects of inorganic nutrients, organic nutrients and deep water microbial populations. Measured variables include inorganic…

Electrical Safety Analysis in the Presence of Resonant Grounding Neutral

2019

The resonant grounding is one of the possible methods of the system neutral grounding for the medium voltage distribution. IEEE standards do define this grounding configuration, but important advantages and drawbacks of the resonant grounding might not be fully known, due to its rather uncommon application in North America. On the other hand, resonant grounding in Europe is imposed by the increased requirements for power quality, especially for medium-voltage (MV) industrial users, imposed to electric utilities by regulatory authorities, with the purpose to protect the interests of users and consumers. Level of the continuity of the service, magnitude and phase of ground-fault currents, mag…

Alleviating Class Imbalance Problem in Automatic Sleep Stage Classification

2022

For real-world automatic sleep-stage classification tasks, various existing deep learning-based models are biased toward the majority with a high proportion. Because of the unique sleep structure, most of the current polysomnography (PSG) datasets suffer an inherent class imbalance problem (CIP), in which the number of each sleep stage is severely unequal. In this study, we first define the class imbalance factor (CIF) to describe the level of CIP quantitatively. Afterward, we propose two balancing methods to alleviate this problem from the dataset quantity and the relationship between the class distribution and the applied model, respectively. The first one is to employ the data augmentati…

Antennal lobe representations are optimized when olfactory stimuli are periodically structured to simulate natural wing beat effects

2014

Animals use behaviors to actively sample the environment across a broad spectrum of sensory domains. These behaviors discretize the sensory experience into unique spatiotemporal moments, minimize sensory adaptation, and enhance perception. In olfaction, behaviors such as sniffing, antennal flicking, and wing beating all act to periodically expose olfactory epithelium. In mammals, it is thought that sniffing enhances neural representations; however, the effects of insect wing beating on representations remain unknown. To determine how well the antennal lobe produces odor-dependent representations when wing beating effects are simulated, we used extracellular methods to record neural units an…

Ripensare gli oggetti, riprogettare la società

2021

The essay introduces a series of classical essays by Bruno Latour on design and techniques, showing the relationships between Actor Network Theory and semiotics. In particular, the theoretical convergences and problematic nodes on the methodological level concerning the application of certain semiotic notions, such as that of actant and that of enunciation, within Bruno Latour's anthropology are discussed.

The economics of platform competition: compatibility, standardization and piracy

2013

This thesis studies the platform competition with compatibility, standardization and piracy. In the first chapter we study the role played by expectations, the strength of the network externality and product differentiation in the strategic decisions of the platforms regarding compatibility and price competition. The decision problem is modeled as a two-stage game. In the first stage platforms simultaneously and non-cooperatively choose the degree of compatibility and in the second stage platforms compete in prices. More specifically, we solve a two-stage game in which duopolists decide simultaneously and non cooperatively the degree of compatibility between their products and they compete …
